Finding yourself exploring the Internet to learn how to start a blog? Let me help you with that.
This blog site is fairly new (barely a year), but the reason why I am confident about giving advice is because I can honestly say that I created this without any professional help. At least the human professional help, of course.
The great thing about the Internet is there are several tools and platforms that you can use to help you create a website. Whether you want a simple blog site or a profitable Affiliate site, you don’t need a PhD to accomplish that.
I understand how disconcerting and discouraging it can be to start a blog – especially for a non tech person like me. This is why I created a three part series on how to start a blog. A lot of new online writers think it is very difficult but if you have the determination and patience to learn them all, it is achievable.
As an online writer, I believe this is necessary in your portfolio as it will help you increase your credibility as a writer. So if you are a writer like me, creating your blog site will definitely widen your knowledge about online writing.
Before you can start creating a website, there are three things that you need to do first.
Step 1: Define your goals
Any project should always begin with this. I truly believe in being prepared. I want to stress just how important it is that you sit down and think about your goals in starting a blog just so it does not end up being a waste of time.
There are several reasons to learn how to start a blog. You can profit from a blog through affiliate marketing. You can create a blog to promote your online store. For me, I started a blog for portfolio purposes. I wanted a professional portfolio that will provide inquiring employers of a glimpse of my writing style. I didn’t want just a personal blog with nonsense ramblings about my life so I decided to focus on a specific niche.
Which brings us to step 2.
Step 2: Find your niche
When we say niche, we so mean that specific part of the wall. Wikipedia defines niche blogging as a blog with a specific market focus. In my case, I wanted my blog to cater to online writers who are freelancing for employers remotely. I used that as my focus – concentrating on my experiences to come up with relevant articles.
Step 3: Choose a platform
There are several platforms to use in creating a blog site. You have Blogger, WordPress, Joomla and other sites that will help you create a simple website. If you want a site that you can earn from, I advise you to hire a professional website developer to help out. But if like this site, you should be able to do well on your own. I am using WordPress for EarnatHomePh and I was able to make it look like this on my own. For a non-tech person like me, I believe my site is pretty decent so I am confident to endorse that WordPress is a platform that anyone can use.
Step 4: Think of a name
The name of your website should be able to reflect what it is about. For instance, this blog site aims to help those who wish to earn a living from their own home – that is why I chose EarnAtHomePh. I was lucky enough to find an available domain name to use as well. Ideally, the URL (e.g. www.earnathomeph.com) should be the same as your site name but that is not necessary. But it is a common practice so best to follow suit.

Facebook is a social online community that links everyone to everyone.Do you think that everyone use it for fun or do you think some guys and girls use it as a networking tool to sell stuff ? The obvious reason would be both. These methods don’t require you to buy anything or pay someone to tell you the “secrets”. As a matter of fact you can start making money with your Facebook right now without having to spend any money at all. There are no”secrets” for making money on Facebook. Simply some very basic methods that people use to make money elsewhere, but with a little work and patience you can apply the same methods to make money on Facebook.
1Decide how much, and how quickly you want to make the money. There are literally thousands of ways of how to make money with Facebook. Some businesses have their own product lines and they simply utilize Facebook to expose these products to their friends and their friends. Some guys use Facebook to market other people’s products. The latter is the way that most individuals do it, from home earning six figure plus incomes, in a period of months.
2Consider using companies that provide you with specific products and websites to market. They also provide training and support on how to use Facebook to market your websites.
3Find a market. In this case the market would be Facebook friends. The more Facebook friends you have, the more chances you have of making more money. What if you don’t have many Facebook friends? Fortunately it’s very easy to create a massive market (friends for Facebook) simply by searching and inviting others to be your friend. But, if you want to take it to the next level and automate the finding and adding friends process, there are some software that can do just that.
4Show ads on Facebook. With all the Facebook applications that make it easy and a snap to start showing ads on your Facebook, there is no excuse for not taking advantage of this method, especially if you are popular amongst your Facebook friends, and have a big audience to show your ads to. Using AdSense, chitika and other PPC advertising companies you can easily setup your ads and customize it to your liking. Make sure to set it somehow that it serves ads related to product and services that you know your Facebook audience is interested in.
5Use affiliate marketing on Facebook. It’s the same idea as showing ads, but in a more direct way. Register for free with affiliate networking sites such as ClickBank, Maxbounty, etc., and pick a product relevant to your Facebook audience interest to promote. You will be provided a simple code which is a link with your affiliate id embedded in it. Whenever someone clicks on that link and buys the product or service, you make money by getting a commission.
6Create an entirely new Facebook for that product and start promoting it there. You can sell multiple products and create multiple accounts for each one. Write short posts about the product and post it on your Facebook with your affiliate link in it. You can make a couple of hundred dollars a month doing this. I know it’s not much, but for something that doesn’t cost you a dime and takes about 30 minutes to set up, and takes about 20 minutes or so a day to run, I don’t think it’s a bad deal.
7Write a Facebook book How To. Facebook is attracting more and more members every day. And lets face it, not all of these people are Facebook savvy. And even though getting started with Facebook might be simple and quick for some, many people have problem with the basic things. Write a small and to the point e-book about Facebook and how to use it. Maybe a simple step by step instruction for getting started with Facebook. Or an e-book about how to use different application to make Facebook experience a better one. There are many possibilities. With the huge amount of Facebook apps and all the new ones that are added daily, this can be quite big. You don’t even have to pay to promote your e-book, simply use your own Facebook or better yet create one for your e-book and start promoting it.
8Blog about Facebook. There are already some people doing it. But there is always room for new voices. Get a free blog over at blogger and use Google AdSense (which is already integrated in blogger, so even if you don’t know how to show ads on your blog, you can set it up with couple clicks) to show ads on your blog and make money that way.
9Get sponsorship. When you have established yourself as an authority and a trusted person for anything related to Facebook, you can get some sponsor and maybe use affiliate networking sites to find and promote Facebook related product.
10Create and sell a Facebook application. If you are savvy enough and know your way around, why not use your skills to make a Facebook app of your own and sell it to Facebook users? Again, once you made it, you can use the same strategies mentioned above (blog or a Facebook page for the app) to promote your app.
There you have it, 5 ideas you can use to make money not only on Facebook, but you can also apply the same ideas to MySpace, Twitter and other social networking platforms to make money.
I get asked this all the time “How Do I Start a blog?” The first question I ask back is “Do you Like to Write?” followed by “What Do you Want to Blog About?” Because that’s what blogging is, at it’s core, writing…writing about something you are passionate about.
Setting up a blog is not hard, but it does take a bit of learning…using blogging software, uploading photos etc. Again, it’s not hard, you don’t have to learn HTML code or anything like that, but you have to love writing about your topic enough to learn a few new things, like buying a domain name, setting up WordPress and learning how to use the software to write a post. Or you have to love it enough to hire someone to do the slightly geeky stuff for you and teach you how the WordPress blogging software works.
That may have sounded intimidating, but there are so many sites out there with free info on how to set up your WordPress blog on your own domain name, that it is really easy to learn. Really it is! Also, if you go with a WordPress-friendly website hosting company like Bluehost.com or Godaddy.com, they can walk you through the geeky process of getting your domain name, hosting account (this is where your blogging files live on the internet) and setting up your WordPress software.
The Real Answer to How To Start a Blog is That it Starts with your Idea
What topic are you interested enough in to be motivated enough to learn this new stuff. What topic fascinates you, resonates with you, do you spend your spare time exploring, or talking about at parties or networking events? That’s where starting a blog begins…with your idea. Topics that you want to connect with other people about are another starting place for a blog. Is there a “social good” cause you want to highlight, or a disease that has affected your family that you want to talk about, are you an artist who wants to get their work out there, or a busy stay at home mom who wants to connect with other moms, or are you a small business owner who wants to connect with your customers in a more meaningful way?
Focusing your Blogging Topic and Identifying your Audience are Steps Two and Three
There are two main schools of thought about blogging – find a niche topic and delve deeply into it, or find one aspect of a broader topic and explore that. For example if you love black labs, that might be a niche topic – where you blog about all aspects of this type of dog, collect stories and connect with owners and want to be owners. One aspect of a larger topic, if your black lab is a search and rescue dog, or you want to do that work, might be to blog about all things search and rescue dog, regardless of dog breed.
You want to select a topic that is deep enough that you can find an audience to connect with your words, but broad enough that won’t run out of things to write about in 6 months, and that will keep your interest over time. At the same time you don’t want your blog topic to be so broad that you and your readers lose interest. Find one that hits that sweet spot that will keep both you, and your audience coming back for more over time. 50% of blogs are abandoned within the first year. To make sure you are not a part of that statistic, it is worth spending a bit of time at the start, brainstorming your blogging idea.
How to Start a Blog – Refining your Topic Exercise:
- Select a topic you are interested in
- Brainstorm 5-15 aspect of that topic that you could write about
- Pick three that a) appeal to you B) you think are large enough to write about over time
- Step back and think about your potential readers. Who would want to read about these three topics? Really picture the type of people who would want to read each idea. Let this guide you to the first topic to try out.
- Ignore the editor within who might want to snear, “no one would read your writing.” That’s just the resistance that many writers have to deal with rearing it’s ugly head. Laugh at it, make faces, give it no power and it will get bored and go away.
- Refocus back on that ideal reader or group of readers…and that first topic idea. Balance their needs, interests and questions with the information you have, or that you will have fun researching and writing about.
- Brainstorm 10 – 15 blog post ideas on that aspect of your topic that they would want to read about.
- Select a second aspect of your topic and repeat the audience and blog post ideas exercise
- Select a third topic and repeat again.
The topic that was easiest to finish, that got you excited, and where you could best imagine your ideal audience just might be your sweet spot of a blogging idea. You are on your way to starting a blog, The next step is choosing a domain name…
A Chinese man has successfully broken the 10-year comatose state of his wife by biting her toes. He tried everything and nothing worked but he then recalled someone saying that the feet are the home for many nerves and bit her toes which surprisingly woke her up.
